Prof. Taddeo Rusoke launches a church-Led Initiative to Restore Indigenous Trees in Uganda

Mityana, Uganda – June 21, 2025
The Orthodox Metropolis of Mityana yesterday marked a significant step in environmental conservation with the launch of the “10,000 Indigenous Tree Seedlings Planting Campaign.” This initiative underscores the Church’s commitment to stewardship, a core tenet emphasizing its responsibility to care for and protect the environment as part of its faith-based mission.
This was during the consecration of Metropolitan Dr. Nektarios Leonard Lubega as the Metropolitan and Africa In-charge of the Orthodox Church. The event highlighted the Church’s dedication to managing resources wisely, promoting sustainable practices, and advocating for the well-being of all creation.
“Prof Taddeo Rusoke encouraged togetherness for Climate Action” as the resounding call when the first three were planted by distinguished guests, including His Beatitude Metropolitan Gregory of Boston, USA; His Grace the Most Reverend John Bishop of Woodside, New York, USA; and the newly inaugurated Metropolitan Dr. Nektarios Leonard Lubega. These were joined by several other delegates, all united “Together for a Sustainable Planet.”
This campaign aims to significantly contribute to the restoration of Uganda’s indigenous tree cover, promoting biodiversity and combating climate change through community-based action led by the Orthodox Church.
